Judy Mandel’s Replacement Child Reviewed in PW

Congrats to Judy Mandel for her book Replacement Child, which was recently reviewed in Publishers Weekly.

“By cleverly shifting between recent years and the day of the crash, Mandel weaves together chapters of real and imagined scenes  building to the inevitable. “I read that replacement children often feel they can never live up to the memory of the dead children. I recognize myself in some of the descriptions of those with this affliction.”

Keep the good news coming.  If you’ve been published or have a success to report, please let us know.

Writing Contest: Love on the Road 2013

iStock_000021816808XSmall“Love on the Road 2013 will be an anthology of stories about making connections, from heartfelt ones ending in weddings, to less high-minded ones ending in beds (or wherever). Half the stories will be about travelers meeting people far from home, and the other half about people meeting travelers passing through.

You can submit your 5,000-word story to us between January 1, 2013 and March 31, 2013 — along with a $10 reading fee. We will choose the best 12 stories for publication and send them to our panel of judges, which includes writers and literary agents. They will pick the stories that will win the cash prizes of $200, $100 and $50.

Help us spread the word by posting this flyer in a place where writers will see it.”

WHAT OUR WRITERS ARE SAYING ABOUT THE WESTPORT WRITERS' WORKSHOP

"We covered a lot of material in a four hour workshop. I went home right away and used some of the tips. Seeing an immediate improvement in sentence structure it left me wanting more!"

- Morgaine Pauker

"Not every wonderful writer is a wonderful teacher, but Sandy Barron excels at both crafts. She teaches fiction writing with compassion and insight, offering the novice and experienced writers countless opportunities to hone their skills. Not only does Sandy pack each two hour class with her wonderful teaching, she also follows up with class emails loaded with  reading suggestions, poetry and other helpful tidbits.  All in all a gifted teacher!"

- Christine Pakkala

"Marcelle's 'Get Published Now' workshop was absolutely fabulous and well worth both the time and money.  She gave clear directions, and walked us through how to research and pitch to editor whichsaved me hours of time trying to figure out where to go to have my essays published. I left feeling motivated more than ever to get my work out there."
